A reminder about logging into the system

Parents,

As we open the parent portal back to you to view your children's grades, please understand that we have very tight security on this system. If you have not successfully logged into the system within 3 tries, do not continue to try, contact your school. If you continue to try the system will shut down and lock out all users all over the diocese.

Because of this very important change, it is strongly recommended that you do not share your password and ID with anyone, including the children. If they want to see their grades and assignments, the children should be with you as you log on to the system.

Please e-mail me if you have any concerns.

Adele,

If a user is logged on to the Powerschool system and is in the process of viewing grades will the user be able to continue viewing the grades or will the system simply shutdown?

Will a prompt appear to tell the users the system has shutdown?

How long will it take for the system to come back up?

Thank you,

Ceil

Ceil,

If a user is in the system and the system is locked because someone tries to log in too many times the user in the system will still be able to view grades until they log themselves off. The system will be up again once our IT Department can restart the server. Depending on the day and time of the event it could be minutes (during a regular work day) or hours (nights or weekends.)

Adele, I have logged in and I two children going to the same school and I only see one of my child's grades. Is there something else that I should be doing, or possibly her information has not been loaded as of yet. The School is OLV. Please let me know who to proceed.

Eileen,

OLV is sending home the other children in the families ID's and passwords today. There is a separate ID and password letter for each of your children.

Sorry for the delay,
Adele

how come there are no options to change your userid and password. it will be hard to remember the id and password you sent to us.
All secure server nowadays have these options.

Benjie,

The system was built to not allow username and ID's to be changed because they wanted to have the highest level of security. Many parents want the ability to change their username and password and we have sent these requests to the engineers at Pearson. If they allow the change to be possible it will be in a future version.

Sincerely,

Having worked in the industry (including systems security) for more than two decades I do not understand the need to block ALL users out when a single user fails to login successfully. This is a sign of inadequate security on the part of the software and service provider not the other way around. If they cannot defend against possible hack attacks without shuting down the system altogether, something is VERY wrong with their system. When financial institutions and other agencies and companies with a lot more sensitive information to protect, do not have to resort into such extreme actions, you really need to question why your service provider needs to do so...

Sincerely,

VDV

VDV,

Thank you for your input. The company has set up our load balancer this way to prevent hacking into the system. I understand that financial companies have a large amount of sensitive data, however, many parents feel any information regarding their children is just as sensitive. There are difficulties with this type of a plan and we are in contact with Pearson to find a better way.
